Customs Formalities for Moving to Switzerland

When you move to Zurich from the UK under a transfer of residence, you can usually bring in your household goods duty-free, as long as you meet certain rules.

To qualify, you must:

• Give proof that you lived in the UK before, such as utility bills or bank statements with your name

• Show proof that you live or work in Switzerland, such as a rental agreement or a job contract

• Submit a copy of your passport (photo page)

• Demonstrate that goods have been in your possession and use for at least six months

• Finish all shipments within 24 months of your official change of home address

• Do not pack banned goods, such as guns or animal skins. Tell customs about things with limits, such as drink or tobacco

Note: New items (under six months old) may be subject to customs duty or VAT.

To avoid any delays, please give us all your papers before packing, so we can clear your move in advance with our Swiss customs partner.

Required Documents for Import into Switzerland

Swiss customs want to see a few real, signed papers before they say yes to your goods:

• Original signed Customs Form 18.44 (we will supply this)

• Copy of your passport (photo page)

• Full inventory of your household goods (we will prepare this for you)

• Proof that you live in Switzerland, such as a rental agreement or papers showing you own a home

Additional documents depend on your residency status:

a) Returning Swiss Citizens

• A letter from your local Swiss commune or from the Swiss Embassy in London

• Proof of at least six months’ residence in the UK

b) Non-EU Citizens

• Swiss residence permit or approval letter

• Entry authorisation (“Zusicherung der Aufenthaltsbewilligung”)

c) EU Citizens

• Employment contract in Switzerland

• Registration certificate from the local Swiss commune

• Residence permit or official confirmation

d) Second Home Owners

• The lease or proof of ownership for your Zurich home

• Evidence that your primary residence remains abroad

Important: Customs Form 18.44 must be original and signed. Swiss customs will not take scanned or digital copies, so post the real form.

Export Clearance for Moves from Switzerland to the UK

Planning to come back to the UK later? We handle the whole export clearance process for you, including:

• The UK Transfer of Residence (ToR) form and your URN number

• Passport copy

• Inventory list (prepared by us)

We plan both the import and export sides, so moves run smoothly and follow the rules, whichever way you are going.

Planning Your Move to Zurich, Step by Step

Start by fixing your Swiss address. Customs needs proof of where you will live, so a signed lease or proof of purchase is one of the first things you will need. Once you have it, we can plan the move dates around your start date at work and the day your keys are ready.

Next, gather your papers. You will need proof of your UK home, proof of your Swiss home or job, your passport and the signed original Customs Form 18.44. Keep these in one folder and send copies to us early, so we can check them with our Swiss customs partner before your things are packed.

Then sort your home room by room. Decide what to take, what to sell and what to give away. Swiss flats can be smaller than UK houses, and many come without light fittings or white goods in the kitchen. Check what your new flat includes before you decide what to bring.

Finally, make a full list of everything you are sending. Customs will want a clear list of your goods, and it also helps us plan the right size of vehicle. Mark anything fragile or of high value, so we can give it extra care.

Access, Parking and Building Rules in Zurich

Many homes in Zurich are flats in buildings with shared stairs and small lifts. Talk to your landlord or building manager about moving day. Ask if there are set times for moves, if the lift can be used and where the van can stop.

Parking a large vehicle in the city centre can be hard, and some streets need a permit for a removal van to stop. We check access before we arrive and plan the best place to park. In narrow streets in the old town, we may need to carry items a short way or use a smaller vehicle.

Switzerland has clear rules about quiet times in residential buildings, including on Sundays. Moving is usually done on weekdays or Saturdays as a result. We will agree a day and time that fits the rules of your building and keeps your new neighbours happy.

What to Pack and Leave Behind for Your Zurich Move

UK electrical items will need plug adaptors in Switzerland, as the sockets are different. Small items like lamps and chargers are fine with an adaptor or a new plug. Large kitchen appliances may not be worth moving if your flat already has them.

Do not pack banned items such as firearms or animal skins, and declare any alcohol or tobacco. Food, plants and cleaning liquids are best left behind. Our packing service can pack your whole home, or just the fragile items, using the right boxes and wrap for a long road trip.

Keep a bag with you that holds your passport, papers, medicines, chargers and a few days of clothes. Your shipment may arrive a little after you do, so it helps to have the basics close at hand.

Settling Into Your New Home in Zurich

Once your things arrive, our team can unpack, put furniture back together and clear the empty boxes and wrap out of your rooms. Tell us which room each box belongs in, and we will place it there. Labelling boxes by room before you leave the UK makes this much quicker.

Swiss rental flats are often checked closely when you move in and when you leave. Take photos of each room on the day you get the keys, and note any marks or damage. Keep this record safe, as it can help when you hand the flat back one day.

Recycling is taken seriously in Zurich, with clear rules for paper, glass and other waste. Ask your landlord or building manager how it works in your block. If you have lots of boxes left over, ask how to recycle them, or keep a few flat for your next move.

Moving Back to the UK From Zurich

If you plan to return to the UK one day, keep your Swiss paperwork safe. When the time comes, we can handle the UK Transfer of Residence form, the URN number and the export side in Switzerland. Call us on 07428474474 or 02080444474, or email info@elitemoving.co.uk, to talk about a move in either direction.
