Which Companies Offer Student Moves to Switzerland?

Are you a student planning an exciting move to Switzerland for your studies? You might be asking, “Which companies offer student moves to Switzerland?” This guide helps you look at your options and choose the best moving service for you. We point out trusted firms that focus on low-cost student moves shaped around your needs, so your move is simple and free of stress.

From packing your books and laptops to sorting out the customs forms, the right moving company makes sure your trip is smooth and reliable. Let us take a look and find the right moving partner for your new life in Switzerland.

Understanding Student Moves to Switzerland

Moving abroad as a student brings its own challenges. Unlike a full house move, a student move usually means fewer things, a tight budget and a fixed term timetable. You might be moving from your home country or from another part of Europe, but either way, good planning is the key to a smooth start.

Switzerland has high living standards and well-run systems, so you will need to plan with care. You will have to think about your visa, where you will live and how your things will get there. Exchange rates, customs rules and the different language areas can also make your move more tricky.

Even with these hurdles, studying in Switzerland is a dream come true for many people. The country is home to top schools like ETH Zurich, the University of Geneva and EPFL Lausanne. It has amazing views, and its trains and buses are quick and on time. People come from all over the world to live there. All of this makes it a great place to live and study.

But before you settle into your new student life, you will need a moving company that knows how to make the trip smooth, low in cost and free of worry for you.

What Makes Student Moves Unique?

Student relocations are not like most removals. Students tend to send the basics, such as books, clothes, laptops and small bits of furniture. They do not send a whole house of things. Budgets are often tight, so low-cost ways to ship are common. One is groupage, where lots of loads share one container.

Being flexible matters too. Term start dates, exam times and the days you can move into your room all mean the timings need to be flexible. Many moving firms now offer student discounts, flexible delivery slots and short-term storage to meet these needs.

Safety and care for the planet matter as well. Students often travel with costly tech and key books and notes, so safe packing and insured transport are vital. Green packing and shipping that offsets its carbon also appeal to students who care about the planet.

Some firms go a step further. They give advice on settling in, with tips on banks, transport and housing in Switzerland. This makes the whole move even easier.

Tips for a Smooth Student Move to Switzerland

Moving abroad is exciting, but it takes careful planning. Here are the key tips to make your move free of stress.

Start Planning Early

Start to get ready at least two to three months before you leave. Look into moving firms, get quotes and book your service early to avoid extra charges at busy times of year.

Pack Light and Smart

Focus on the basics, such as clothes, laptops, papers and study materials. Use ways to save space, like vacuum bags, and do not pack things you do not need. Remember that Switzerland has lots of low-cost second-hand shops for furniture and things for the home.

Research Swiss Customs Regulations

Switzerland has strict customs rules. List all your personal things correctly, most of all your tech. Students can often bring in their personal things without paying duty, but check if you qualify first, so you avoid fines or delays.

Organise Key Documents

Gather key papers like your passport, student visa, university offer letter and proof of where you will live. Keep digital copies safe in cloud storage so you can get to them easily.

Budget Wisely

Compare quotes from a few moving firms to find the best value. Some movers, including Elite Moving, offer student discounts and flexible ways to pay. Do not forget to set money aside for insurance, customs fees and any storage costs you might have.

Arrange Student Health Insurance

You must have health insurance in Switzerland. Get your cover sorted before you arrive, so you are protected from day one. Many universities can help you choose a student insurance plan.

Learn Basic Local Phrases

Switzerland has four official languages. They are German, French, Italian and Romansh. Learn a few simple greetings or phrases in the language used near your school. It helps you settle in faster and make friends.

Choose Eco-Friendly Options

Pick moving firms that work in a greener way, for example by using crates they can reuse or materials that can be recycled. Elite Moving leads the way here with its green approach to moving.

Communicate Regularly

Stay in touch with your mover during transit. Track your shipment through online portals or mobile apps, and inform your family of your itinerary for peace of mind.

Rest Before Your Journey

Moving can be tiring. Get plenty of rest before your flight, and plan for any time difference, so you arrive full of energy and ready for your new chapter.

Studying in Switzerland: Your Student Move Questions

Does it matter which Swiss language region my university is in?

It helps us plan. Zurich is in the German-speaking part, while Geneva and Lausanne are in the French-speaking part. Building managers and housing offices may write to you in the local language. Send us any move-in notes from your housing office, even if they are not in English, along with a contact name and phone number. We use them to plan delivery to your building.

Should I bring bedding and kitchen things from the UK or buy them in Switzerland?

Switzerland is known for being expensive, so many students bring everyday items from home. Bedding, towels, pans and a desk lamp are light and easy to box up, and replacing them in Zurich or Geneva can cost far more. Bulky furniture is a different story, as many rooms come with the basics. Check what your room includes before you decide.

Can you send my bike or skis along with my boxes to Switzerland?

Yes. A bike is handy for getting around a Swiss campus town, and many students want their skis or snowboard close to the mountains. We wrap the frame, turn the handlebars flat and pad the gears. Skis and boards go in a bag or long box. List them on your item list too, as they count as part of your goods.

When should my boxes arrive for the start of the autumn semester?

Aim for your things to arrive soon after you collect your keys, not before. Swiss housing offices often hand over rooms close to the start of term, and they may not accept boxes early. Tell us the date you get your keys, and we plan the collection in the UK to match. If dates slip, we adjust the delivery day with you.

My Swiss room is furnished. What is still worth sending?

In a furnished room, you will rarely need large items. Focus on things that are costly to replace or that make the room feel like home, such as books, a good desk chair cushion, winter clothes, sports kit and a few photos or posters. A small load like this often fits in a few boxes, which keeps your move simple and lower in cost.

How Elite Moving Plans a Student Move to Switzerland

Every student move starts with a quick chat. Tell us where you are moving from, the address of your new room or flat in Switzerland and roughly what you want to take. A few boxes and a bike need a very different plan from a small flat full of furniture. We then suggest the best way to send your things and give you a clear quote.

For most students, a shared load is the best value. Your boxes travel in the same van as other loads heading to Switzerland, so you only pay for the space you use. If you need your things by a fixed date, such as the start of term, a dedicated van may suit you better. We will explain the pros and cons of each.

Before we collect, we send you a simple list to fill in. It covers what is in each box and roughly what it is worth. This list is needed for Swiss customs, and getting it right helps your things cross the border without delays. We check it with you and help with the forms.

Settling Into Student Life in Switzerland

Most student rooms in Swiss cities are small, and many are already furnished. Check what your room includes before you pack. There is no need to send a desk or bed if one is already there. Bedding, kitchen basics and a lamp are often more useful.

Many student blocks have set times for moving in, and some have rules about where a van can stop. Ask your university or landlord about this early, and send us the details. We will plan the delivery around it, so you are not left waiting on the street with your boxes.

If your room is not ready when your things arrive, we can keep them in secure storage until it is. This is also handy at the end of the year if you go home for the summer and come back in the autumn. We can store your things and bring them back when the new term starts.

Common Mistakes Students Make When Moving Abroad

The most common mistake is taking too much. Moving costs are based on space and weight, so every extra box adds to the bill. Go through your things and only take what you will really use. You can buy cheap second-hand things once you arrive.

Another mistake is leaving the paperwork too late. Visas, health insurance and customs lists all take time. Start early, keep all your papers in one folder and save copies online. Finally, do not pack your passport, laptop or chargers in the boxes you send. Keep them with you when you travel.

If you are not sure what to take or how to send it, call Elite Moving on 07428474474 or 02080444474. We are happy to talk it through and help you plan.

We’ve recently used Elite for our move to France. I’d happily recommend their services. Both Scott and Jake were really helpful in packing our things up and were friendly and professional. The company kept us informed and also advised us on what we needed to do, and they also got back to me quickly if I had any queries. All in all, everything went smoothly and our things arrived safely in France. I wouldn’t hesitate in using them again.

I requested quotes from multiple removal companies, but from the first call with Vij, I knew I was going to choose Elite Moving.

I used Elite Moving for my move from London to Amsterdam, and the whole process was incredibly smooth. Vij was always available by phone to clarify any questions, even during weekends (I know, not ideal, but I truly appreciated it!). The removal team was very friendly, took excellent care of all my items, and were especially careful with those classified as 'fragile.'

Delivery was incredibly fast, and the value for money was exceptional. I have nothing but positive things to say about this company. I would definitely use them again and highly recommend them for any type of removals, both within and outside of the UK.

We used Elite to organise our relocation from UK to Switzerland. I was very happy with the service. They were able to meet my timelines and kept me updated throughout. The crew were friendly and packed everything with lots of blankets and protection. They were very responsive, even early mornings and late at night. Which I really appreciate. Price was also reasonable.

Moving made Elite-ly Easy
I had a very great experience using Elite Moving headed by Viji and Ranjan. We have already moved 4x and so far moving with them has been the best to date. Ranjan had 2 addditional men helping out to move our 1br basement flat from Lee to Bromley. They are experienced movers and no damage was done to our 65in tv, sofa and fridge. They know which items to go inside the van first showing how experienced they are. They have brought blankets with them to ensure no damage is done in taking out the boxes via our flat’s windows and wraps to protect the chest of drawers and fridge. They had strings on the van’s walls so critical items dont move or get damaged. They have been really patient and had even helped me assemble and setup the living room in my new flat. They would’ve helped me assemble the bed but I couldn’t find the screws.

In terms of payment, they prefer cash but the deposit I paid via bank transfer. This was not an issue for me.

Overall, the moving experience was great and will get them when we move again.
