Customs Formalities for Moving to Switzerland

If you are moving to Geneva from the UK to make it your new main home, you can usually bring in your household goods with no duty to pay, as long as you meet some set rules.

Moving your household goods to Switzerland means you must follow certain customs rules. Most people moving under a transfer of residence, where Geneva becomes their new main home, can bring in their personal things free of duty and tax. This is usually the case as long as they meet the rules below. Do check the current rules before you move:

General Requirements:

  • You must prove that you lived in the UK before, usually by showing council tax bills, bank statements or bills for gas, power or water.

  • You must show that you have been given the right to live or work in Switzerland, through a lease, a job contract or a residence permit.

  • A copy of your passport (photo page) is required.

  • Goods must have been in your use and possession for at least six months prior to the move.

  • All shipments must be completed within 24 months of your change of residence.

  • Some goods are prohibited, such as guns or animal skins. Some are restricted, such as drink or tobacco.

  • New items (less than six months old) may be subject to tax.

To avoid delays, you must send all the right papers to us before your goods are packed. That way we can check everything with our Swiss customs agent ahead of time and fix any gaps.

Document Requirements for Import into Switzerland

Swiss customs need a few key papers before they will approve your shipment:

  • Original signed Customs Form 18.44 (we will provide this).

  • Copy of your passport (picture page).

  • Inventory of goods (we will prepare this for you).

  • Proof of residence in Switzerland, such as a deed to your home or a rental agreement.

Other papers you need depend on your own residence status:

a) Returning Swiss Citizens

  • A Registration Certificate from the local Swiss town hall. Or you can get a Certificate of Deed Registration. This comes from the Swiss Embassy in London.

  • Proof of at least 6 months’ stay in the UK.

b) Non-EU Citizens

  • A permit to live there, or a letter that says yes from the local Immigration Office.

  • Official entry authorisation (“Zusicherung der Aufenthaltsbewilligung”).

c) EU Citizens

  • Employment contract.

  • Registration Certificate from a Swiss town hall.

  • Residence permit or confirmation from Immigration Office.

d) Second Homes

  • Proof that you own or rent your second home in Switzerland, such as a deed or lease.

  • Proof that your main home is still outside Switzerland, for example a lease or home loan papers from another country.

It is vital that Customs Form 18.44 is the original and is signed. Digital copies are not accepted.

Export Clearance for Moves from Switzerland to the UK

If you are moving back to the UK from Switzerland, you will need the papers below to clear export checks:

  • A filled-in UK Transfer of Residence form (ToR) and your URN number.

  • Copy of your passport (picture page).

  • Inventory (provided by us).

We help with both import and export steps, so you meet all the rules and avoid any problems.

Getting Ready for Moving Day in Geneva

Geneva is a busy city with trams, narrow streets in the old town and strict rules about where vans can stop. Before moving day, ask your landlord or building manager where a removal van can park and whether you need a permit to reserve the space. Many buildings also have a caretaker who sets the times when you can move in, so check this early.

Tell us about any lifts, stairs or long walks from the street to your door. If the lift is small, we may need to take some furniture apart or carry it by hand. Knowing this in advance means we can send the right size of van and the right number of people, so there are no surprises on the day.

It also helps to sort out your Swiss address papers before the goods arrive. Your customs papers need to match the address where we deliver. If your plans change, tell us as soon as you can, so we can update the forms with our customs agent before the van crosses the border.

If you are not sure what to ask, call us and we will talk you through it.

Packing Tips for a Move from the UK to Geneva

Start by going through each room and deciding what to take. Swiss flats are often smaller than UK homes, and many come without built-in wardrobes. Measure the rooms in your new home if you can, and only take furniture that will fit. Selling or giving away what you do not need cuts the cost of the move.

Keep a clear list of everything you pack, room by room. Swiss customs want to see a full list of your goods, so it saves time to write it as you go. Put high-value items, jewellery and important papers in a separate bag that travels with you, not in the van.

If you would rather not pack yourself, our packing service can do it all for you. We can pack your whole home, or just the fragile items such as glass, china and pictures. Our team uses strong boxes, padded wrap and wooden crates where needed. You can read more about our international removals before you book.

Finally, pack an open-first box for your first night in Geneva. Put in bedding, towels, a kettle, mugs, chargers and some basic food. This one box makes the first evening in your new home much easier.

Moving to Geneva from the UK: Your Questions Answered

Why does a move to Geneva need more customs paperwork than a move to France?

France is in the EU but Switzerland is not. That means your goods are stopped at the Swiss border as well as when they leave the UK. Geneva sits right on the French border, so the van crosses into Switzerland close to the city. Bring your work or rental papers for Geneva. Used furniture you own is often let in free of tax, and we confirm the current rules for you.

Will my UK electrical goods work in my Geneva home?

Some will and some will not. Switzerland uses the same mains power as the UK, but its wall sockets take a different plug. Laptops, lamps and chargers usually work with a Swiss adaptor or a new plug. Large kitchen goods are often built into Geneva flats already, so check what your new home has before you pack a fridge or washer. We can help you decide what is worth taking.

Can you move me back from Geneva to the UK later on?

Yes. Many people go to Geneva on a work contract and come home when it ends. A move back works the other way round. Your goods leave Switzerland through Swiss export checks, then clear UK customs on arrival. We help you list your things and fill in the forms at both ends. Call us a few weeks before your contract ends and we will plan the return.

Do I need to be at home in Geneva on delivery day?

It helps a lot if you or someone you trust is there. Our team will need to know where each item goes, and someone should check the goods as they come off the van. Many Geneva flats have shared lifts or set times for moving in, so tell us early and we will plan around your building.

I had a fantastic experience with Elite Moving Company. Their all-in-one service was exactly what I needed, and they went above and beyond what was originally agreed. They helped with collections, storage, additional ad-hoc pickups, and the final delivery, making the whole process incredibly smooth.

What really stood out was their flexibility around my uncertain dates and timings. They were accommodating throughout and always willing to help, which took a lot of stress out of the move.

I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a reliable and customer-focused moving service, and I’ll definitely be using them again in the future.
